The Power of Focus: Understanding Deep Work

My Current Read: Deep Work by Cal Newport

I just finished reading the first chapter where Cal Newport introduces us to the transformative concept of deep work, emphasizing how focused, distraction-free concentration can significantly enhance productivity and intellectual capacity in our increasingly fragmented world.

The Impact of Digital Technology on Labor Markets

Newport references Race Against the Machine, a book which compellingly argues that the rise of digital technology is transforming labour markets in unexpected ways. To thrive in this new era, you need to fall into one of three groups:

1. High-Skilled Workers

Are you adept at working with intelligent machines? By intelligent, I mean technologies like data visualization, analytics, programming etc. Think of tools like Power BI, Python, or ChatGPT.

To build career capital in this era of rapid tech development, learn to use at least one of these tech disruptions in your area of work. For instance, I’ve been using ChatGPT to generate YouTube thumbnails and title ideas. This tool has saved me immense time and improved my channel's performance. Although my channel usually garners around 50 views per video, the three videos that exceeded 150 views had titles and thumbnails created by querying ChatGPT!

2. Superstars

These are the individuals who excel in their field. The world has become a global village thanks to tools like email and virtual meeting software like Microsoft Teams. This accessibility allows the best talent to thrive while others struggle. On platforms like Upwork and Fiverr, you can hire top-tier talent from around the world for any project.

There’s a saying: “Hearing a succession of mediocre singers does not add up to a single outstanding performance.” In this market, consumers especially top businesses will always choose the very best. Superstars will always win!

Position yourself for the new job market. Do certifications/courses that are recognised internationally. For finance enthusiasts, CFA just introduced Python and Financial Modelling as part of the curriculum..KASNEB would never😂 na si kwa ubaya. Invest that extra shilling in a course that allows you to work anywhere! learn a simple tool like Power BI and incorporate it in your day-to-day work etc. UPSKILL UPSKILL UPSKILL!.. and yes I am shouting at you... please upskill!

3. Owners

These individuals have access to capital and invest in new technologies driving the great restructuring. Classical economic thinking posits that wealth is generated through a combination of capital (K) and labor (L), with rewards proportional to the input. However, technology reduces the need for labor, increasing the rewards/output for owners.

The wealth flowing to billionaires like Elon Musk, who own intelligent technologies, is massive just because they can reduce the labour component. My personal belief is that technology only makes jobs redundant, it can't make you as a person redundant. Learn how to thrive in the tech era by upskilling yourself to use this new tech. If you read the World Economic Forum report on the future of jobs, you will note roles like accounting are seeing a sharp decline in developed countries because of automation and new technologies. In future these technologies will flow to countries like Kenya and be massively adopted. Right now if you equip yourself with data skills like visualization using Power Bi and coding using Python, you will become a very valuable accountant. You will be the go-to to interpret the output from these new technologies. The same applies to any role!

Becoming a Superstar or High-Skilled Worker

If you’re not born into wealth, it can be challenging to join the owner's group. So, how can one become a superstar or a high-skilled worker? Two core abilities are crucial:

  • The ability to quickly master hard things.
  • The ability to produce at an elite level in terms of both quality and speed.

These abilities depend on your capacity to perform deep work. Your attention should be tightly focused on learning or improving a specific skill, and you should receive feedback to correct your approach. Deliberate practice cannot coexist with distraction.

That's it, for now, I am almost done with chapter two. There's a lot more in the book, I am yet to get to the chapter that discusses practical steps to perform deep work. I see there's a chapter on quitting social media. hehe my lawd! I wonder!.. If I don't write a summary of the next chapters itabidi ununue kitabu ujisomee😁

p.s I ran the draft version of this article through chat GPT to improve readability, clarity and flow. It clearly doesn't understand swahili. Some of my words and puns were removed.. itabidi nitafute number ya founder nimsalimie for discrimination!😂

p.s.s Comment below if you want to see more book summaries in future

So Good They Cant Ignore You - Why Skills Trump Passion in the Quest for Work You Love

Cal Newport is renowned for his groundbreaking insights into focus and productivity. He is the author of Deep Work, Slow Productivity, So Good They Can't Ignore You and Digital Minimalism. I first heard about him on Ali Abdaal's channel, I remember it was a video of Ali summarizing Deep Work, one of Cal's books which I eventually bought, and even got to review some of the initial chapters. That review is somewhere in this blog I have since read two of his books, and plan to purchase another one before the year ends. Today I focus on So Good They Can't Ignore You. Why do some people end up loving what they do for a living, while so many fail at this goal? It starts with mindset. Do you have a craftsman mindset or a passion mindset? People who love their jobs have a craftsman mindset, not a passion mindset. Let me differentiate the two: A passion mindset focuses on what the world can offer you, while a craftsman mindset focuses on what you can offer the world.  When you f...

My Best of July

Three qualities that have nothing to do with talent or intelligence, but can make a dramatic impact on your results: • Cheerful: You are pleasant to work with and generally raise the energy level  in the room. • Accountable:  You feel personally responsible for what you want to accomplish. It is not someone else's job. It's your job. •  Adaptable.  You can find alternate paths to success. You don't need things to be a certain way to be happy. Start with the best opportunity available to you. If you make the most of what you have in front of you right now, better opportunities will become available as you go along. Whenever you are stuck searching for the optimal plan, remember:  Getting started changes everything Strangely, life gets harder when you try to make it easy. Exercising might be hard, but never moving makes life harder. Mastering your craft is hard, but having no skills is harder. Uncomfortable conversations are hard, but avoidin...

How to figure out what you really want.

How to figure out what you really want. I love listening to Ted Talks (I have a private YouTube playlist where I save some of my favourite Ted Talks, which I revisit from time to time). The ideas shared on the Ted platform are usually really thought-provoking. Today's piece is a summary of one of my favourites. How to Figure Out What You Really Want by Ashley Stahl. *I have attached a link to the video at the end of the article* There are three ways to figure out what you really want: 1. Self Audit - Where are you holding yourself captive? Ask yourself: What's working? What isn't working? Fear and criticism hold us back. What is something you are afraid to admit to yourself, what is something that you know is true that you wish wasn't? 2. Follow Your Freedom Follow what feels good to you. But how do you know what feels good to you? "Trust your gut" (way easier said than done) Pay attention to your feelings. Keep a joy journal- make a note of moments that lig...
