Embracing Courage: A Lesson From the Kenyan Gen Z protest

On June 25th, 2024, a new chapter of Kenyan history was written. The young generation of this great nation took to the streets. They thundered with a new rhythm—a chorus of patriotic songs soared through the streets, their lyrics a rallying cry for justice and accountability. But amidst the melodies of hope, tear gas punctuated the air, and water cannons lashed out with force, a stark reminder of the resistance faced by those who dared to challenge the status quo.

This was not just a protest; it was a testament to the unwavering bravery of Kenya's youth, Generation Z, who refused to be silenced by fear or intimidation. "Zakayo shuka!" their voices echoed, defying the echoes of authority with every step towards Parliament's gates. As the parliament building loomed large, the symbolic mace was seized, power symbolically transitioned back to the people, and history paused to witness a generation's determination to rewrite its own narrative.

The hair-raising songs of defiance reverberated through the streets, their lyrics etching themselves into the records of Kenyan history. For on that unforgettable day, #RejectFinanceBill2024 and #OccupyParliament were more than hashtags; they embodied a fervent call for transparency, accountability, and the promise of a better tomorrow. In the face of adversity, the youth of Kenya stood unwavering, united in their demand for good governance, their courage blazing a trail for generations yet to come.

Dear Future Son or Daughter,

As I write this letter to you, I am 27 years old, reflecting on the extraordinary acts of courage displayed by my generation, GENZ. We took to the streets to protest against bad governance, demanding justice, transparency, and a better future. Their bravery in the face of adversity has been nothing short of inspiring, and I hope their actions will serve as a beacon of courage for you as well.

The protests, driven by frustration with corruption, unemployment, and inequality, highlight the power of collective action and the impact of standing up for one's beliefs. Despite the potential risks and uncertainties, we chose to voice our discontent and strive for a better tomorrow. We exemplified the true essence of courage: the willingness to confront fear and challenge the status quo.

Courage is not simply about being fearless; it’s about facing your fears head-on and pushing through them. We knew the dangers we faced. We understood the potential consequences of our actions, yet we marched on with determination and hope. Our courage is a reminder that real change often requires taking risks and stepping out of one’s comfort zone.

Always stand Up for What You Believe In: Just like these young protesters, never shy away from standing up for your principles. Whether it's fighting for justice, equality, or any other cause close to your heart, your voice matters. Use it with conviction and integrity.

Embrace Collective Action: Courage is often amplified when people come together. The protests were powerful because we were a united effort. Remember, you are never alone in your struggles; there is strength in solidarity.

Face Adversity with Resilience: The path to positive change is rarely smooth. There will be obstacles and setbacks, but like the brave youths of Kenya, face them with resilience. Every challenge you overcome will make you stronger and more capable.

After watching these events unfold, I am constantly reminded of the importance of courage in my own life. It's not just about grand gestures or public protests; it’s also about the everyday choices we make. Whether it’s pursuing a dream, defending someone who needs help, or simply speaking your truth, courage is a vital quality that can lead to personal growth and societal progress.

As you grow and navigate through life, I hope you find inspiration in the actions of the Kenyan Gen Z. Let their courage be a guiding light for you. Remember, it’s okay to feel fear, but never let it paralyze you. Instead, let it motivate you to take action, to stand up, and to make a difference.

Signed With love and hope for your bright future.

p.s... I used chat GPT and Gemini to improve clarity of the article.
p.s... time yetu sisi tulioccupy parliament .. can't wait to use this line when addressing my kids😂

p.ss..On September 2023, I Dmed Juliani on twitter, asking if he could upload his popular song Utawala on Spotify.
Fast forward to June this year, I just found out he recently uploaded it the same day parliament was occupied #historic..

there's a line on the song which touches on police brutality:

..polisi anapiga rungu, mwalimu, daktari anamrushia teargas na mtoto wake anarudishwa nyumbani, hana school fees..analipwa peanuts..

another line I love - nikiwa na nguvu ya kungoa reli definitely kuinua kura si nzito, ukiingiza kwa ballot box chagua kiongozi wa kweli....

GENZ - tuko tayari kulipa gharama, hatutasimama maovu ya kitawala!

pss.. I queried chat GPT to write a poem on the protest. The output is amazing!:

In the heart of Kenya, a fire ignites, A generation rises, embracing the fight. Against corruption's shadow, they stand tall, Gen Z warriors, answering the call.

With voices loud and banners high, They march forward, reaching for the sky. In the face of fear, they find their way, Chasing the dawn of a brighter day.

Their courage, a beacon in the darkest night, Against the odds, they push for the light. In unity and hope, they find their might, A testament to the power of their right.

Not born of wealth, nor seeking fame, They fight for justice, in freedom's name. Their spirit, unbroken, ever so bold, A story of courage, forever told.

To you, my child, I share this tale, Of young hearts that refused to fail. Let their bravery be your guiding star, In every struggle, near or far.

For courage is not the absence of fear, But the strength to face it, with sincere hearts. Like the Kenyan Gen Z, let your spirit soar, And in every challenge, find your roar.

Till next time...have a great weekend!

So Good They Cant Ignore You - Why Skills Trump Passion in the Quest for Work You Love

Cal Newport is renowned for his groundbreaking insights into focus and productivity. He is the author of Deep Work, Slow Productivity, So Good They Can't Ignore You and Digital Minimalism. I first heard about him on Ali Abdaal's channel, I remember it was a video of Ali summarizing Deep Work, one of Cal's books which I eventually bought, and even got to review some of the initial chapters. That review is somewhere in this blog I have since read two of his books, and plan to purchase another one before the year ends. Today I focus on So Good They Can't Ignore You. Why do some people end up loving what they do for a living, while so many fail at this goal? It starts with mindset. Do you have a craftsman mindset or a passion mindset? People who love their jobs have a craftsman mindset, not a passion mindset. Let me differentiate the two: A passion mindset focuses on what the world can offer you, while a craftsman mindset focuses on what you can offer the world.  When you f...

My Best of July

Three qualities that have nothing to do with talent or intelligence, but can make a dramatic impact on your results: • Cheerful: You are pleasant to work with and generally raise the energy level  in the room. • Accountable:  You feel personally responsible for what you want to accomplish. It is not someone else's job. It's your job. •  Adaptable.  You can find alternate paths to success. You don't need things to be a certain way to be happy. Start with the best opportunity available to you. If you make the most of what you have in front of you right now, better opportunities will become available as you go along. Whenever you are stuck searching for the optimal plan, remember:  Getting started changes everything Strangely, life gets harder when you try to make it easy. Exercising might be hard, but never moving makes life harder. Mastering your craft is hard, but having no skills is harder. Uncomfortable conversations are hard, but avoidin...

How to figure out what you really want.

How to figure out what you really want. I love listening to Ted Talks (I have a private YouTube playlist where I save some of my favourite Ted Talks, which I revisit from time to time). The ideas shared on the Ted platform are usually really thought-provoking. Today's piece is a summary of one of my favourites. How to Figure Out What You Really Want by Ashley Stahl. *I have attached a link to the video at the end of the article* There are three ways to figure out what you really want: 1. Self Audit - Where are you holding yourself captive? Ask yourself: What's working? What isn't working? Fear and criticism hold us back. What is something you are afraid to admit to yourself, what is something that you know is true that you wish wasn't? 2. Follow Your Freedom Follow what feels good to you. But how do you know what feels good to you? "Trust your gut" (way easier said than done) Pay attention to your feelings. Keep a joy journal- make a note of moments that lig...
