Quarterly Review of New Years Resolutions
Conventional wisdom is that New Year's resolutions typically fail 😃. As the calendar flips to the start of a new quarter, it is part of my tradition to reflect on the just concluded quarter and set sights on a better, brighter progress to achieving my yearly resolutions.
This habit has become an annual ritual. In this article, I will share how I do my quarterly reviews.
First, some quick facts:
- 38% of people make New Year's resolutions each year, but only 9% of people stick to them all year long.
- 80% of New Year's resolutions are forgotten by February, while 46% of adults still stick to their resolutions after 6 months.
- Improving their fitness (39%) and diet (33%) are the most common New Year's resolutions.
- Friday is a popular day for goal-setters to drop their resolutions 😂😂aah I wonder..
The structure of my quarterly reviews is as follows (a concept I picked from Sahil Boom):
- Reflect
- Assess
- Adjust
I reflect, assess and adjust on 2 major facets of my life, these are:
a. Personal.
Here I reflect on my health, relationships, finances and general personal well-being.
My overall goal is to maintain a healthy BMI, consistently work out, eat well, be a better partner and ensure I create enough time for my hobbies (including writing this blog)
On finances, I ensure I am right on track to achieve my emergency fund target, I also adjust my savings from time to time guided by several factors. I might increase my shopping budget because inflation is serious buana. Vitu za thao you don't even need a carrier kwa bag, zinatoshea kwa mfuko😂😂
tip: I escalate my savings yearly by the previous year's inflation rate to maintain my purchasing power in future years.
b. Professional
Everything work-related. I cover my career goals and upskilling goals.
For the review, I ask the following questions. I will not deep dive, this was more to just provide you with a template you can use.
1. Reflect
- What created energy this quarter? - What activities, people or projects consistently gave energy?
- What drained energy this quarter? Basically who/what were the boat anchors in my life i.e. anyone/anything that held you back from your potential.
- What did I learn this quarter? - 'When you stop learning, you start dying' - Albert Einstein
- What were my greatest hits and worst misses this quarter?
2. Assess
- What is my most important thing right now?
- Are my current systems and habits aligned with my most important things?
- What is creating a drag on my progress right now?
3. Adjust
- What are the energy-creating activities I need to spend time on?
- What energy-draining activities do I need to delegate, delete or minimize?
- Am I dedicating the necessary energy to my most important thing?
- What changes need to be made to my current systems or habits to more appropriately align with my medium-term and long-term goals?
- What do I need to eliminate from my life to reduce drag and accelerate my progress?
I hope that helps. Happy Easter!
